By 2029, the effects of global warming coupled with the depletion of oil drastically reduced the world's population. Then an unforgiving winter storm arrived in the Pacific Northwest. Through that period of unrelenting winds and sub-zero temperatures, the few survivors formed together in 'families' for protection. Their plight is made even more difficult by a military patrol assigned to guard the last remaining gasoline reserves on the west coast. This is the story of a young boy that unites two families to fight back against the tyranny of these soldiers.

The Button Boy Lawrence Kadow 9781456864675 Books Reviews

I read The Hunger Games and enjoyed it, and immediately picked up a copy of The Button Boy. Honestly, it kept me up in the middle of the night moreso than Hunger Games. I love ruthless, post-apocalyptic stories of resourcefulness and survival, especially when they're written to keep me on the edge of my seat and make it almost impossible to finish a chapter without immediately starting the next one. That's how Button Boy reads. I can't wait for the sequel!
This book was given to me a few months ago and I put off reading it until I knew I had the time to not put it down. I'm glad that I waited! The characters are well developed and the intensity of the time and setting is very real. The author paints a world which is all too possible if things don't start changing here on Earth politically and environmentally. I found this book more favorable than The Road, which I found very dark and depressing. I, too, am looking forward to the sequel and the prequel from this talented new writer!
Found this book on the reccomendation of a good friend. Started reading, hours later could not put it down! Very interesting view into a possible future. Great story line, i really enjoyed the transition from character to character. I also enjoyed the authors placement of humor! I would reccomend this book to anyone intrested in fictional reality. Just picked up the next book "the Ferndale Sector"! Cant wait to see what happens next!
I started reading this book thinking, "this is a very quiet start" to something described as "post-apocalyptic." Here I was all set to plunge into blood, guts and gore, but Kadow masterfully drew me into the everyday lives of people just trying to survive, not only from starvation and deep, winter cold, but the very possible scenario of a world that did not anticipate nor adapt to the effects of the collapse of petroleum and the growing strength of global climate change. But the ending, WOW, Kadow lets the Button Boy pull the trigger and all hell breaks loose. I sat on the side of my couch and yelled "Yahoooo!" at the ending. Now, that "Ferndale Sector" is out, I know what I'll be sending friends for Christmas!
With everything going on, we might wonder how it would be after a collapse of society as it is. For me 'the button boy' is an excellent story of how that might be in an average small town. The people would not be predictable, you yourself might not act as you think you would. This book is not the usual blood and guts, or epic good vs. evil framing of this kind of story. It's genuine treatment of folks like you might know around you draws you into a world we might come to know. This is just the kind of storytelling I'm crazy about. If you're like me, you'll finish this book at 230 in the morning and have dreams about the world in this book. It is a gripping story. This one takes you further along after "the road" by Cormack McCarthy.
One of those stories that has you hooked from page one. Found myself right there in Ferndale trying to survive with the others. Hated reaching the end of the book. Hoping there will be a sequel soon.
I love this story...location is close to my home.
For me as a survivalist this book was more than an excellent story, which it is indeed. But it allowed me to get immersed in a very plausible scenarios in the near future world. Thought-out and quite informative details were a great addition to a story of people, their relationships, their inner world, the circumstances and situations they coping with, and discovering their hidden values and abilities as Humans.
I will be impatiently waiting for more stories from this writer!
